You are in a meeting with the CEO and the legal advisor. The CEO says: Now that
Question:
You are in a meeting with the CEO and the legal advisor. The CEO says:
“Now that we’ve investigated how to get a trade license, we need to think about another key issue: software piracy. Counterfeit software is a problem everywhere, but it’s a particularly big issue in many developing countries that do not recognize or enforce intellectual property rights.
Do we know anything about the protection of intellectual property rights under Volonian law?”
The legal advisor replies:
“I’ve been investigating Volonian law, and I have good news to report. The Volonian government has endorsed the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (T R I P S), which is administered by the World Trade Organization (W T O). This agreement requires (W T O) members to recognize and enforce intellectual property rights. So we should have no problems with software piracy in Volonia.
Decision Point: Your Response Regarding Software
After hearing the legal advisor's advice, the CEO looks to you for your opinion. What do you think?
A) I’m not sure. That commitment is a good indicator, but you may be making some risky assumptions.
B) You’re wrong on this one. Signing an agreement means nothing. We should assume that our software will get no legal protections under Volonian law.
C) That sounds persuasive. If Volonia is committed to that agreement, then we should be safe from piracy.
