Question:
You are the lead IT Support person for Wolfram & Hart, a software development firm that recently got a big investment from a venture capitalist. The influx of money will help the company grow its staff and services. Your task is to assess the needs of the company and determine the best equipment, software and solutions to meet those needs. Here are some details about the goals of the company.
- The company will be hosting its own website including e-commerce of their software.
- The company will utilize databases heavily.
- The developer teams will be using SharePoint and Microsoft Teams for collaboration.
- About 100 developers will be working remotely. Another 100 will be on-site.
- They will need a Microsoft email solution as well as Microsoft Office software.
- Do not include any software that would be used for game development/design/testing.
They will need workstations for:
- Developers (Programming)
- Graphic Designers (3D modeling)
- Quality Assurance/Software testing (gaming rigs)
- Management/Office Staff (Office suite)
- Sales staff (Demo/Spreadsheets/remote work)
They will need servers to run:
- Game Servers/Non-GUI/Linux based systems
- Any solutions you deem as "on-premises"
Assume that they have more than adequate network bandwidth for all services that you feel should be on-premises. You do not need to include networking equipment, firewalls or security components.
Your task is to evaluate the needs indicated above and decide on 1) equipment for each area, 2) software needed for the overall operation of the company as stated above and 3) the process of installing/implementing those solutions.
1) Research the specifications for a computer for each area (Use your best estimate on what you think someone using a computer as listed above would need). The same model/configuration will be used for all employees of that department. Include estimated cost (use real data from vendor websites). Research high end servers for software/virtualization/etc. (Whatever you plan on hosting locally). Include specs and estimated costs from vendor websites. Be sure to say how many you might need. (Give it your best estimation). If hosting in the cloud include what platform (Google/AWS/Azure) and what you will need from them.
2) Decide what software will be needed for the company to operate. Consider on-premises, cloud and hybrid solutions. What will be hosted where and explain why you believe that is the best solution. Consider redundancy/high availability/failover as well as overall cost. You do not have a budget, but you do have to be considerate about the money you are spending.
3) Explain the process of implementing your solutions. What happens first, second, etc. Include a diagram of your active directory organizational structure. (OUs/Groups/Computers/Etc.) Explain how each component will be used and tied together within the company. If using on-site servers/hosting explain why and what the pros and cons are. If using cloud services, explain why you chose it and what the pros and cons are.
