You have been asked to create a one-day training program for employees in your workplace. The performance gap it must address is the increasingly hostile interpersonal environment that has emerged. The training needs assessment uncovered a variety of uncomfortable interpersonal confrontations in a variety of contexts. In some cases there have been angry responses to postings on a private Facebook Page available to all staff. At other times there have been contentious moments during group activities in various training programs. It is also common to hear two or more individuals argue loudly in hallways and meeting rooms. Disrespectful conduct was also identified with respect to supervisory treatment of direct reports. At a recent executive staff meeting the CEO acknowledged the relatively coarse state of the organizational culture with respect to civility. The group worked with HR to develop a series of initiatives to address this issue, one of which was to create an organization-wide training effort. In conducting the needs assessment, those making the inquiry discovered that a lot of the antagonism seemed to be based on generational differences in the workforce.
