Question:
You have been provided with a summary of a number of theories that have been used to explain the causes of various forms of domestic violence. Please contrast and compare 3 theories, and describe how this information will assist you should you encounter a victim/survivor of domestic violence.
Traumatic Bonding Theory
This theory speaks to the power differential between individuals in violent relationships and the intermittent nature of domestic violence. Over time, the victim/survivor becomes dependent upon the dominant abuser and during periods of less violent times, when positive love and affection is demonstrated, the relationship is legitimized and the victim/survivor feels intensely grateful for the kindness displayed towards them.
Social Learning Theory
Domestic Violence arises out of many contextual and situational factors including individual/couple characteristics, stress, substance use and financial difficulties. This theory also addresses child witnesses to domestic violence.
The following video is upsetting, even to those who have worked with survivors and perpetrators of IPV. It is a very sad, and powerful example of how children are used to control survivors. It also speaks to impact on young people. Dayton & Malone (2017) talk about male youth and their particularly strong affiliation to parents of the same sex. In households where disproportionate male power and control is present and patriarchal ideologies are embedded in the family, young males are more susceptible to be future perpetrators of IPV. While considering your responses to the stop and think questions below, consider these two components of SLT and how it makes sense of the generational cycle of violence.

Culture of Violence Theory
This theory is based on the belief that in pluralistic cultures some sub-cultures view violence as acceptable and just within the family context. This theory has also been used to explain that a "culture of violence" against women is created as a result of pornography and violent television images.
