Steps

Open the attached document and save it to your computer.

Format the first page as a block letter with open punctuation (see Appendix A in your textbook).

Using the same information reformat the second page as modified block with closed punctuation

Change the name in the signature block to yours on both letters.

Use a different font for your signature in the signature block

Save and submit your file for grading

Open and save one Word document with both letter formats. You will use the same letter, but format them two different ways.

What is the difference between open and mixed punctuation?

Open punctuation means there is no punctuation after the salutation and the complimentary close (sincerely) The salutation in an open punctuation formatted letter would look like this:

Dear Mrs. Schieke (note, there is no colon or comma after my last name)

Sincerely (note, there is no punctuation after the word)

Mixed punctuation (also known as closed punctuation) means there is punctuation after those two letter parts. The only choice for the salutation is a colon. Your salutation would look like this:

Dear Mrs. Schieke:

The complimentary close would look like this:

Sincerely, (use a comma after whichever word you choose to use for the close - Best, Regards, Yours sincerely,)
