9.1 INTRODUCTION Trust is a concept that plays a major role in any interaction between different entities. Trust has several applications in both social and business activities. With the current booming of web-based applications, especially, e-commerce, e-business, and e-negotiation, trust has become a major component for the success of these applications. Therefore, there is a great need for understanding the trust concept. In addition, trust has become an integral component in future network infrastruc- tures. For example, in peer-to-peer networks, users (or nodes) are allowed to share and exchange data, an activity that necessitates the establishment of trust between different users. In addition, the performance of such collaborative network would be greatly degraded, if no effective trust measures were implemented. Several studies have given different definitions for trust. We put forward different definitions of trust from the available literature. In Reference 1, trust was defined as "the firm belief in the competence of an entity to act dependably, securely, and reliably within a specified context" (assuming dependability covers reliability and timeliness). In Reference 2, trust has been defined in the following way: "Trust in a system is defined as an individual's belief in the competence, dependability, and security of the system under conditions of risk." A large body of research addresses the topic of trust from different angles. Some studies view the problem from a theoretical perspective, and hence, propose a theoretical framework to capture the aspects of trust [2]. In Reference 3, an abstract, logic-oriented notation called SULTAN (Simple Universal Logic-oriented Trust Analysis Notation) has been proposed to facilitate the specification and analysis of trust relationships. We do not intend to survey the literature of research in trust, and hence, for more details, we refer the reader to the article [1].
