Question:

At steady state, fuel oil is supplied at 0.50 cm3/s to an oil furnace for home heating. The fuel oil density is 877 kg/m3. Combustion air at 19 °C and 100 kPa enters the furnace with a mass flow rate 16 times that of the fuel mass flow rate. The pressure in the chimney flue is approximately 98 kPa, and the flue diameter is 0.20 m.

(a) Determine the mass flow rate of combustion product gases flowing up the chimney flue.

(b) Determine the volumetric flow rate of the air and the ratio of that to the fuel volumetric flow rate.

(c) Determine the average velocity of the combustion products in the flue if the gas temperature is 108°C. Assume that the flue gases behave as an ideal gas with an apparent molecular weight of 29 kg/kmol.
