While he was a soldier in the U. S. Army during World War II, Lieber found some of Adolf Hitler’s personal effects. Twenty- two years later, while Lieber was living in Louisiana, his chauffeur stole the collection and sold it to a dealer, who then sold it to Mohawk. Mohawk had no knowledge of the background of the collection and bought it in good faith. When Lieber learned that Mohawk had the collection, he demanded its return.
