A transformer is essentially a mutual inductance device. Two coils are wound around an iron core; an alternating current in one coil induces an emf in the second. The core is normally made of either laminated iron-thin sheets of iron with an insulating material between them-or of a bundle of parallel insulated iron wires. Why not just make it of solid iron?
