In Table 7.2 the drag coefficient of a 4:1 elliptical cylinder in laminar-boundary layer flow is 0.35. According to Patton [17], the hydrodynamic mass of this cylinder is πρ hb/4, where b is width into the paper and h is the maximum thickness. Use these results to derive a formula from the time history U (t) of the cylinder if it is accelerated from rest in a still fluid by the sudden application of a constant force F.
