Use the process described in Exercises 8 and 9 to plan and role-play another situation. Imagine that a coworker’s behavior falls into the “obnoxious aggression” category of radical candor. Earlier in the day, you overheard your coworker tell a customer, “You need to be more careful with the product. It’s not a toy, and you’ll be responsible if it breaks again.” This time, in the middle of the role play, stop and have both students reflect in action. Use the questions in Figure 7. Based on your responses, what changes in your approach will you make for the rest of the conversation? After taking this break, finish the conversation. What changes did you make, and how, if at all, did they affect the outcome?

Exercises 9

Using the scenario described in Exercise 8, have the student leading the discussion follow the steps for encouraging a dialogue. Start the conversation, listen actively and openly, share your perspective, problem-solve, and end the conversation. Review suggestions in the chapter for each step of the process without being too rigid: these are only guidelines. Have other students in your group observe and take notes. After the conversation, first ask the student who played the role of the one who submitted the work how the conversation went—what went well, and how could the discussion have gone better? Next, have the observers give their feedback. Finally, have the student who led the conversation summarize the feedback and describe possible changes for the future.
