Currently, our military is voluntary; the armed forces sets its wages and benefits so it can attract an adequate and presumably skilled body of soldiers. In the past, our nation has used the draft, forcing people into military service at low pay. If we were to return to a draft, how would the opportunity cost of maintaining our military be affected?
