Guy Standing (2011) has warned that there is a new dangerous class in the making. He calls it the ‘precariat’: a growing number of people, a class, or people from across the world living and working precariously, in and out of short-term jobs. They have no occupational identity, they do not belong to a community that has durable values, and they have no solidarity. Of those who fall into this class, many do not have a good level of education. Some are migrants. They are anxious as they face economic uncertainty, as the jobs they find are insecure. They do not have that feeling of well-being that psychologists discuss. They face alienation as they are told what to do. They are under-employed, not using all their skills nor living as they aspire to live. They are angry and frustrated. Increasingly they have to ‘work for labour’, that is, do unremunerated work in searching for work. All of us are in danger of finding ourselves in this emerging class. Do you agree with this picture that Guy Standing paints? (You may want to watch one of his lectures on YouTube.)
