Question:

Review the section on “Virtual Groups.” Discuss your experiences with electronic communication such as e-mail, threaded discussion bulletin boards, and chat rooms. What are some positive effects of virtual groups? What are some negative effects of such groups?

VIRTUAL GROUPS

Virtual groups are human groups using computer systems to link group members. They feature an information technology environment using PCs or workstations connected over a network. The network can be in a single room, over an organization’s intranet, or over the Internet. Such connections allow different temporal and physical patterns ranging from meeting in a single room simultaneously or at dispersed locations asynchronously. Figure 10.2 shows one virtual group configuration. Software within the system supports problemsolving and decision-making groups. The system’s goal is to support group processes that increase decision effectiveness and quality. A single-room layout has individuals or small groups seated at individual PCs. Some physical interaction is possible within this pattern. Another pattern lets people work from their offices either within the same building or at scattered locations. This design typically does not allow direct physical interaction.

Another design links people over the Internet either within rooms equipped for virtual groups or at individual computers. The people in this pattern can be at scattered locations anywhere in the world. This type of group becomes part of the virtual organization described in Chapter 17, “Organizational Design.”
