Question:
Read the arguments given below:
1. After reading the articles and watching the video regarding sweat shops my perception of them has changed. When I thought about sweat shops I wasn't think about the people that work there so much as the conditions that they worked in. I think that it is clearly important to the global economy as explained in the articles. I mean if it took 58 years for Britain to do what Asia did in 10 you can say that it definitely makes a difference. While I do not agree with the conditions that these people work in watching the video gave me perspective to where they came from and what their other options were.
The video and articles discuss the difference that these sweatshops make in the effect of creating a new type of middle class in their areas. While the conditions are poor the other options for these people are limited making it a necessary evil so to speak.
If I were a CEO it would be something I would have to consider with a good amount of thought and control. While I like the idea of giving the less fortunate people of these Asian countries a chance at least having something, I am not ok with knowing I would be profiting off the misfortune of others.
2. We were asked to engage in a discussion regarding sweat shops, and our thoughts about them, based on our interpretations of the assigned articles. After having the opportunity to read both of the articles, and review the video, i find myself torn. While I believe that everyone has the right to work in a safe environment, there are jobs (even in the US) that are hazardous by their very nature (consider a slaughterhouse or a munitions manufacturer). To engage an argument before it begins, I am aware that workers in the situations I provided make far more than their Chinese counterparts, but they are certainly not the highest paying positions in the labor market. In fact, some of the most hazardous and labor intensive jobs in our nation tend to be the lowest paying (in comparison). From the resulting commentary provided by our assigned readings, I have surmised that the factory jobs in china are standard labor positions, and pay the going rate for that type of work. So considering compensation and currency value, it appears that the salaries are par for the country.
Write down the analysis on both arguments in your own words.
