(found in the textbooks navigation pane under Chapter 1 > Summary > Case Farondo) 1. Write a brief (1-2 page) a memo describing your initial analysis of the situation at FAME as it relates to the design of the database application. Write this as though you are writing a memo to Martin Forondo. Ensure that your memo addresses the following points: a. Your approach to addressing the problem at hand (e.g., specify the systems development life cycle or whatever approach you plan on taking). b. What will the new system accomplish? What functions will it perform? Which organizational goals will it support? c. What will be the benefits of using the new system? Use concrete examples to illustrate this. Outline general categories of costs and resources needed for the project and implementation of the ultimate system. d. A time line/road map for the project. e. Questions, if any, you have for Mr. Forondo for which you need answers before you would be willing to begin the project. 2. Create an enterprise data model that captures the data needs of FAME. Use a notation similar to the one shown in Figure 1-4 of the text. NOTE: You are welcome to use a PDF editor or Visio if you already have it and prefer to use it. Otherwise, the model can be done in a Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet using the Insert > Illustrations > Shapes feature (please fill the spreadsheet in background in white to conceal the gridlines). If difficulties are still encountered, diagrams can also be sketched and scanned as PDFs but must be easy to read. For question 3, refer to the background information in the textbooks Chapter 2 Case Farondo Management Excellence Inc. 3. Create an E-R diagram for FAME based on the enterprise data model you developed in Question #2. Clearly state any assumptions you made in developing the diagram. Refer to guidance from question 2 regarding diagramming tools. For question 4, refer to the background information in the textbooks Chapter 3 Case Farondo Management Excellence Inc. 4. Create an Enhanced E-R (EER) diagram for FAME that extends the E-R diagram you developed in question 3, but accommodates the information gleaned from the e-mails from Pat Smith and Shannon Howard. Be sure to explain/highlight where changes were made from the prior diagram from #3. For question 5, refer to the background information in the textbooks Chapter 4 Case Farondo Management Excellence Inc. 5. Map the EER diagram you developed in #4, to a relational schema using the techniques described in this chapter. Be sure to appropriately identify the primary and foreign keys as well as clearly state referential integrity constraints.
