Question:
An earlier lesson focused on understanding the size and causes of gaps in performance. As we noted, in some cases that type of analysis would determine that interventions other than training would be the appropriate way to address the problem. Think about an organization in which you recently worked. Assume that the organization had previously used Dell PCs but recently decided to switch all of its hardware and related software to MacIntosh. In this case the CEO decided that there was no reason to conduct a gap analysis. In fact, it would make little sense since to this point there are no existing Mac users in the office, and therefore no way to measure whatever performance problems might exist using the new technology. You have been asked to construct a preliminary plan that will allow the company to focus on a training needs assessment associated with this pending change. The preliminary plan must address the following issues:
- Who should participate in the training needs appraisal (and why)?
- What methods the organization should use to collect relevant data (and why)?
You will need to provide sufficient detail about the organization to help the reader assess the degree to which your plan is relevant to the environment in which you worked. You don't have to give the name of the organization if you choose, but may substitute "X" as its name. Also, you must also make appropriate connections to the commentary and text in explaining the reasons for the choices you make. You are also free to use other sources (but not from Wikipedia).
