Assignment
According to the Association for Talent Development (ATD; formerly "ASTD"), which is one of the largest professional organizations related to employee training, employer training expenditures have increased in recent years to an average of $1208 per employee per year. Training expenditures make up approximately 2% of payroll costs, some of which are devoted to providing mandatory training (e.g., safety training required by OSHA), and some of which are devoted to discretionary training employers hope will help in the development of employee knowledge, skills, and competencies. Despite the substantial investment by employers in training, many employers do very little in the way of evaluating training program effectiveness or the return on investment for these programs.
Training Program: HR Management Team Role
In this activity, you will play the role of a management team at a trucking company which employs more than 200 full-time commercial semitruck drivers. You're responsible for providing a recommendation with regard to the company's employee training programs. For the last 5 years, your company has outsourced all training to a consultant group called I-Train-U Inc. Your company's contract with I-Train-U is up, and now you are being asked to review the costs, benefits, and all pertinent information to determine whether to renew the contract. If you do renew the contract, you will need to consider whether to make any modifications to the contract going forward (for example, you might decide to continue with one type of training and discontinue another type of training). If you decide not to renew the contract, you will need to suggest alternative ways of meeting the company training needs. Your recommendations should be grounded in tangible evidence and reflect important organizational training issues like training effectiveness and transfer of training as well as necessary resources (e.g., time, money).
The attached template contains information which has been provided to your company by ITrain-U Inc. with regard to the types of training they have provided, training costs, and training evaluation/effectiveness. Please review this information and use it along with other references (e.g., your textbook, empirical journal articles, reputable online sources like the Department of Labor website, Association for Talent Development website, Society for Human Resource Management website) to complete the remainder of the attached template.
