Assignment:

For this assignment, students will have an opportunity to apply some of the course concepts that relate to recruitment and selection as well as gain some insight into proactive initiatives some employers have undertaken to address barriers to recruitment and selection faced by immigrants.

Assignment Part 1:

There are some restaurants, bars and retail organizations that place a lot of emphasis on hiring individuals who are attractive. When handing in an application or appearing for an interview, female candidates are sometimes rated on how attractive and shapely they are. Candidates must pass this first hurdle and if they dont, they are not considered further, even though they may have the required experience and other requirements.

Questions:

1. What arguments can the employer make that this is a legitimate basis for making the hiring decision?

2. What arguments can you make that this should not be a factor in the hiring decision?

3. Is this a situation of a violation of Ontarios Human Rights Code? Explain.

Assignment Part 2:

You have been directed by your manager to find a way to reduce employee theft. You believe that this can be accomplished by screening out people who fail a commercially available honesty test. Based on the results of this test, you plan to reject applicants who fail this test. You are also considering giving this test to current employees. (This scenario has been adapted from your e-text.)

1. What arguments could you make that this test is not appropriate?

2. What arguments could you make that this test is appropriate?

3. What information would you want to know about this test before making the decision to administer it?

4. Discuss the legal or other issues you may encounter if you administer this test to applicants and then not hire them, or if you give this test to current employees and then dismiss them.
