Alpine Ski Country Ltd. is a mid-sized cross-country ski manufacturing company based out of Edmonton. The company originated when two best friends and cross-country ski enthusiast, Landon Baeton and Sunjay Patel, constructed their first set of skis in the unheated garage of their rented house in northwest Edmonton. Over time, the company has grown substantially, and they now have a manufacturing shop with over 140 employees. With the onset of hiring employees, Landon took over most of the managerial duties in the manufacturing plant while Sunjay managed the sales and marketing department. Both Landon and Sunjay started going to Business school but neither of them finished their diploma or degree. In the past, Landon and Sunjay have been resistant to hiring an HR professional as they felt that HR people just fill out paperwork and act like the HR policy police. Landon and Sunjay like the casual friendly atmosphere that they fondly remember from the early days of Alpine Ski Country Ltd. However, recently, they have been spending most of their time dealing with employee issues, so they have contacted your consulting company for advice. With the demand for Alpine Skis growing each year, the number of employees hired has also increased significantly. Unfortunately, Landon and Sunjay have been caught off guard too many times when they are short staff to keep up with the heavy demand of orders. This has been happening every fall around November and December when there is a surge in orders. They have noticed that about 20% of their staff tend to quit each year and others move up into various jobs within the organization. When asked about which jobs entry level employees are moving into, Landon and Sunjay were unsure. They said employees are just filling in where they are needed during a crunch. Without the proper training in new roles, there have been a few accidents and poor-quality products which have also caused the company to receive poor reviews. Landon and Sunjay would like to bid on a contract with the federal government to supply skis to all the forestry and emergency workers in Canada. This would be a large contract and they are not sure if they would meet all the employment requirements to bid on federal contracts. Additionally, a few people have called about employment opportunities and asked if Alpine Ski Country can accommodate a wheelchair user or a hearing-impaired individual. At the time, Landon told the applicant that he did not think they could make the accommodations. He realizes that he does not know how to proceed in hiring someone with disabilities. Alpine Ski Country Ltd. mentions on their website that they believe in diversity, but the owners realize they are not living up to those values. As business continues to expand, Landon and Sunjay understand that they cannot properly do everything. They would also like to hire a social media manager, but they have no idea how to go about hiring for a position which they have never had in their company. PROBLEMS 1.
