This includes identifying all of the tasks involved as well as how much time is spent on each task, or group of tasks. For example using a computer is not just one task. An individual must enter commands through a keyboard, mouse, trackpad, other, receive output (typically visually, but not always, using the monitor) from the computer, navigate the operating system and software or apps needed for the job, etc. Most things that we think of as tasks are actually several smaller tasks. Each of these granular tasks requires a different KSAO (e.g., manual dexterity, vision, operating system knowledge). This is how we should decide what is required for a job, but we often dont bother. Many organizations just guess (e.g., 4 year degree, 2 years experience) which excludes viable candidates and potentially selects those who lack the necessary KSAOs. This is bad for everyone. ** Side note, the above example (using a computer) does not exclusively require things like manual dexterity and vision. Adaptive technology provides access to individuals who otherwise could not interact with computers (e.g., those without vision or the ability to manipulate a keyboard, mouse, etc.). When considering tasks and associated requirements below, keep this in mind. Think about what is truly needed (e.g., ability to interface with the computer) rather than what you personally would need to do this task (e.g., use a mouse). For this assignment you will conduct a brief job analysis of a job of your choosing. As the job analysts in this scenario you bring multiple perspectives to the analysis process. Many of you have, or had, previous jobs, part or full time, or volunteer experience. Regardless of whether you have done this job before, you can analyze any job. The job analysis section in the textbook starts on page 121 with the techniques located on 123. Identify three major roles (task clusters) that individuals in this job would play. We are looking for generalizations across the industry, not organization specific requirements. For each role identify at least three tasks involved in that role. For each task identify what KSAOs would be required in order to be able to do that task. When you are complete, identify the primary requirements that would be listed in the job specification. For example, if multiple tasks require some form of knowledge and that knowledge would come from a bachelors degree, the job requirement would be a bachelors degree. You are essentially clustering and summarizing the necessary KSAOs. You can present your findings in lists, use diagrams, etc. Whatever best suits your style.
