Data and Information Case Study
A school district has three schools.
Each school has its own system to manage records.
The district office wants to centralize record keeping to provide students and parents with
access to:
teacher contact information
student course assignment information
student transcript information
Phased approach:
Phase 1: Teacher contact and student course assignment information (i.e., no student
transcript information)
Phase 2: To be determined based on Phase 1 results
Points to Consider
1.
There are different solutions that could be identified for this Case Study. Think about how you
might approach this scenario and make some assumptions. This will seem difficult at first, but
after some thought, it will become apparent.
2.
There is no correct answer.
It is group work and the ability to arrive at a solution that counts.
3.
Emphasis is on the highest level of Conceptual Model to get exposure to the topic as a manager.
The learning outcome is not to come away as a Data Base Design subject matter expert. We
have some very experienced members in the class- a great opportunity for collaborative learning!
4.
This is a Database group project. (Not a Big Data or Data Warehouse project.)

5.
While you may model the DBMS using Access (or some DBMS software), both models can be
done using Word. In particular, Slide 6, the Logical Model, is just a list of table entities and the
associated fields. You can do the Logical Model in a table format in Word.
6.
The most important takeaway from this Group Project is to be able to discuss DBMS concepts at
the most basic level- as a manager. No heavy technical lifting is required!

helpful. You are encouraged to use the Internet for additional resources as you may find better sources
that match your needs more:

Entity-Relationship Diagrams (ERD)
(focus on the first diagram)
The first reference, Data Modeling,
has great visuals of three models: conceptual, logical and physical.
You are to include only the conceptual and logical models for this group project.
