It promotes productivity by fostering good management and will workflow which improves productivity for all employees. It also boosts employee morale because employees can communicate with their supervisors about their concerns, and this will lead to building and maintaining good relationships which is also another benefit. The drawbacks of the chain of command are it can cause less collaboration because rules will already be set and in place, which can lead to reduced employee empowerment. Some employees may not take the decision in a situation, and it may discourage employees because they cannot act on their own in a particular situation. Another drawback is can cause more competition among management because everyone is going to have ideas and decision-making managers might feel that their fellow managers are trying to be protective about their employees and employ control over them. This can also slow down communication because an idea or problem will have to go through several people before reaching the decision-maker. In my opinion, I think chains of command are needed when building an organizational system, establishing figures of authority in various environments, and simplifying decision making. People on different levels or who have different experiences within a chain of command have unique responsibilities to tend to. Individuals who are low on a chain of command often have the least influence over organizational matters. When there is no chain of command, organizational activities may become more complicated, confusing, and can result in less productivity.
