Firms facing a highly differentiated environment usually create different business units to best serve each market segment. Will the company operate virtually or at a physical location? Think about changes organizations made to address the recent pandemic. What type of training will be important to enhance the organization?

What type of organizational talent will be required and how will this talent be retained? A factor influencing organizational structure is the nature of the organizations talent. For example, a flexible structure is more appropriate if highly skilled workers need to work in flat, team-based structures to get the work done most effectively. Advertising and marketing firms are often organized into teams.

What is the Organizational Size? An organizations size also influences its structure. Smaller organizations tend to be less bureaucratic than larger firms. Larger organizations tend to have greater specialization and departmentalization, greater hierarchy, and more rules than do smaller firms.

What are the organizations expectations of the employees, and how will the employees be assessed? What attitudes does your organization want to encourage or suppress?
