My short response:

Conflict in workplace is not unnatural, team members will naturally disagree with each other on goals, attitudes, habits, and various factors. Generally, it arises depending on the workplace situation but can ultimately be beneficial. There is a distinguishable difference between the two types of conflict which are functional and dysfunctional.

Functional conflict arises during disagreements within a team that are more task-oriented such as items on an agenda rather than personal differences like unfriendly negotiation between team members. For example, two team members might disagree on what the best possible solution is to approach an objective. Although that seems like a negative, it will only positively increase productivity and critical thinking between team members. Sparingly, disagreement sparks serious goal-oriented discussions as opposed to constant harmony that will only cause issues for lack of team cohesiveness and quality. If there is always a consensus within team and no disagreement, team members will be too afraid to participate in constructive criticism. In addition, it is beneficial that disagreement and functional conflict arise within teams to effectively problem solve and create a better-quality solution.

Dysfunctional conflict is an experience in which tension arises between team members overall affecting the outcome of a team-oriented task. Compatibility can affect the outcome of group success by making it less easy for team members to work together because of personal and/or creative differences by putting compromise aside. For example, two managers at a firm can have different perspectives on how a workplace should function making it difficult for them to collide and compromise, but this does not mean they cannot work together. Although it is understandable that it is not always easy to work together, team members can comprehend the importance of working together in a friendly manner to achieve their objectives. In addition, promoting a safe way of challenging team members would be an ideal method of strategy for team effectiveness in group discussions instead of seeming like the undermining of team members. Maintaining a positive work environment with a well-organized structure where team members can professionally complete objective are essential in teamwork.

It is important that managers and team members try to distinguish the difference between functional and dysfunctional conflict, this way it would be easier to know where to make changes. To increase functional conflict, team members should be more vocal and allowed to negotiate when given a task to create the best possible outcome for their target objective. To decrease dysfunctional conflict, managers and team members can make changes in teams and take the appropriate steps in making it a functional team.
