From an HR perspective, one thing that companies can do to prepare for a rapidly aging workforce is to plan for this rise in age and recruit employees in different ways. One way to prepare for this is to have the company hire and accommodate these employees via workplace planning, which identifies the numbers and types of employees the workplace will require (Steen et.al, 2019); this will allow a company to adequately forecast it's needs and allow the company to change plans if necessary. Another way to plan for this change is through recruitment through alternate means. This does not only refer to different platforms such as job boards and social media, but also focusing on either specific skills or general abilities. The hiring of knowledge workers is being increasingly shifted towards; these workers are hired primarily due to their experience and knowledge (Steen et.al, 2019). Finally, what can be employed is the hiring of a multi-generational workforce. Although younger generations are highly recruited a desired, older workers must not be discriminated against; as the workforce is growing older, many will be in no hurry to retire. Although the different generations working at the company might occasionally be at odds with each other, the new skills and learnings of the younger generation and the knowledge of the older can effectively contribute to a multi-generational workplace (Steen et.al, 2019). 2. For me, these changes mean that I will be heading into a workforce that will not only have a large amount of people my age, but also a large number of older workers who are in no hurry to retire. I feel that a large amount of wisdom can be gained from these workers who have been working longer in the field, and if there is a chance for one or more of them to impart that knowledge to me, I will take it. As well, a wide variety of workers who be valuable as they may have different perspectives on how to take on projects at work. 3. One chapter from the textbook I feel can prepare someone for these changes is Chapter 6-Training, Learning and Development. If a workplace wants to diversify and improve its workforce, part of this will involve training and developing employees to adapt to these changes. Training workers on how to adapt to change, embrace nem styles of instruction and become better in other areas will be a crucial part of a better workforce.
