Initial Volume of NaOH (ml) | Final Volume of NaOH (ml) | Volume Change of NaOH Titrated (ml) | |
Trail 1 | 10.37 | 20.25 | 9.88 |
Trial 2 | 20.90 | 28.90 | 8 |
Trial 3 | 29.00 | 37.87 | 8.87 |
Procedure and observations
Method
Weigh 1.0 g of potassium bitartrate and dissolve it (as best as possible) in 100mL of distilled water.
Filter your solution and keep all your filtrate (the liquid that has passed through the filter).
Measure 30.0mL of the filtered solution and place it in a 125mL Erlenmeyer flask
HINT ???? the dissociation that just happened is the equilibrium that we desire to calculate Ksp. It produced K+ and HC4H4O6 -. The HC4H4O6 - is what is involved in the titration (one acidic H) so if we calculate [HC4H4O6 -] somehow, we could answer our question.
Add 3 drops of phenolphthalein to the 30.0mL solution.
Use standard procedures to fill a burette with 0.100M NaOH.
Use standard procedures to titrate the solution with the sodium hydroxide.
Cleanup: The burette must be WELL rinsed after the lab is complete. If it isn't, when the basic solution dries it will form solid NaOH and ruin the burette.
Using the burette, the initial volume, final volume, and volume change should be put in the table for each trial to illustrate the volumes used of the sodium hydroxide.
USE ONE (1) TRIAL TO SHOW THE FULL STEP-BY-STEP CALCULATIONS TO FIND THE Ksp. For your other two trials, just report/summarize the values (calculations don't need to be shown for these).
