Question:
Imagine that you are a leader in the IT department of a hospital and your CEO pulls you aside to get your opinion. It seems that he has just returned from a conference where he became convinced that the hospital should begin using Virtual or Augmented Reality technology. Unfortunately, he is not sure how or even why but believes that it is the “way of the future”. You have always considered yourself pragmatic and while you are passionate about technology, your inclination is to weigh the pros and cons and move forward slowly. The CEO must have sensed this as well because he approached only you for advice on the matter. You respond by asking for a little time to research and consider the matter further.
- Task
- Do some research to help you reach a conclusion. Specifically, what are some possible medical applications of AR and/or VR in a hospital setting? Have you found evidence of their being helpful and cost effective? There are numerous resources available, but here are a few to get you started: WebMD, HuffPost, News Medical, and National Library of Medicine.
- If your conclusion is that the hospital should adopt the technology, write about a potential application. Otherwise, write an example of one of the negative aspects of using such technology.
