The Meanings of KSAs
KSAs are the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to perform the tasks of a job. Skills are learned proficiencies in areas and developed capacities that facilitate learning or the more rapid acquisition of knowledge. It includes basic skills, complex problem solving skills, resource management skills, social skills, system skills, and technical skills. Abilities are inherent aptitudes of a candidate and enduring attributes of the individual that influence performance. It includes cognitive abilities, physical abilities, psychomotor abilities, and sensory abilities. You can learn more in detail about the meanings of KSAs’ and their subsets under “Browse by O*NET Descriptor” after you click on Find Occupation. How to complete this assignment?
Visit the website: www.onetonline.org, click on Find Occupations. Type key words of an occupation that you most likely to pursue upon graduation or within five years, such as “sales manager” or “financial analyst.” The screen will show you a list of occupations that are related to your key words. Choose one occupation that fits your search most and click on it. Then click on “Details” to read Details Report for the job. After reading the detail report for the chosen occupation, you shall select TWO important KSAs with an important score of at least 65 or higher – one item from “Knowledge” that is your strength and another item from “skills” or “abilities” that is your weakness. If no score is higher than 65, you shall choose the highest score in that category. The explanations for each part of the assignment are provided below.
Job Title: The job you select should be what you want to pursue upon your graduation or within five years of your graduation. A job title must come from the website and do not make up your own job title. Also, you shall indicate if the job is Green, Bright Outlook or both in parentheses after job title. For example, Job Title: Financial Analyst (*Bright Outlook, Green).
Job Zone: After you find a particular job, click on Job Zone on the top of the webpage, you can find Job Zone and then copy the first line under the Job Zone.
Assessment of my strength in knowledge
Definition: Knowledge: Copy the importance score and definition of a specific knowledge item you chose from the website.
Strength Assessment (8-15 lines):
The writing structure of this part should have three layers:
The guiding sentence at the beginning to indicate from what sources (studies or work experience) you acquired this knowledge. For example: I obtain my knowledge in economics and accounting mainly from courses I have taken at college. Another example: I possess solid knowledge of economics and accounting that obtained from the course work and my work experience.
Then you need to develop the body part of your assessment – giving specific facts/examples to explain what you have learned and how well you are (to what extent you possess this knowledge).
Finally, you need the concluding sentence to indicate how you will keep updating your knowledge in this area or how this strength will help you with this particular job. For examples:
I will keep myself stay current through reading relevant research reports and journals in the filed such as Economist and Fortune magazine. Another example: My solid knowledge of economics and accounting and work experience give me a good start toward a financial analyst position and I plan to attend finance conferences and seminars regularly to update my knowledge.
Assessment of my weakness in skills/abilities
Definition: Skills/Abilities: copy the importance score, and definition of the skills/abilities item you chose from the website.
Weakness Assessment (8-15 lines):
The writing structure of this part should have three layers:
First, you need the guiding sentence at the beginning to simply indicate what is your weakness. For example: An active listening is a weak area I need to work on in order to become a financial analyst. Another example: After reviewing the details report for financial analyst position, I realize that active listening skill is my weak area for improvement.
Then you develop the body part of your assessment – giving specific facts/examples to describe your weak area and reasons for the weakness.
Finally, you need the concluding sentence. For example: Improving active listening skill is now at the top of my agenda and my action plans are discussed below.
Two Steps for Improvement (6-15 lines):
You need to address two steps you plan to take to improve your weak area. You should use “first” and “second” to refer to each of your two steps. First step is about learning such as taking classes, attend seminars, and read cases. Second step is about practice such as through student organizations, working on projects, internships, or work experiences. (See writing sample in this handout).
