Jocelyn works as a Human Resources Manager for a large international organization, and it's becoming more and more stressful at work as the company is constantly changing and evolving. It is a requirement for her job to keep pace with this change by implementing new strategies as well as ensuring that the focus remains on her key role of looking for new employees. She found that she works twelve hours a day, six days a week and has no time for her friends and family. She started yelling at employees when they asked her questions and when they made small mistakes in their work. Levels, Jocelyn decided to attend a counselling session.

Here is an excerpt from Jocelyn's first session with her advisor:

Counsellor: Well Jocelyn, let's spend a few minutes talking about the connection between your thoughts and your emotions Can you think of some times this week when you were down at work?

Jocelyn: Yes, absolutely. It was Friday and I had just implemented a new employee policy. I was imagining I would get a lot of phone calls about it because I always do but I ended up taking pictures of people on the phone.

Counsellor: How did you feel at that time?

Jocelyn: I was very nervous and also annoyed by the other employees because they didn't understand the policy

Counsellor: What was on your mind?

Jocelyn: I guess I was thinking that no one appreciates what I do.

Counsellor: All right. You have just identified what we call automatic thought. Everyone has them. They are thoughts that come to your mind immediately without any effort on your part. Most of the time, the thought happens so fast that you don't even notice it but it does have an effect on your emotions. It is usually the feeling you notice, not the thought. These automatic thoughts are often distorted in some way but we usually do not stop questioning the validity of the idea. But today, what are we going to do?
