Here is the question
n Chapter 7 of the text, there are several forces for organizational change: workplace demographics, technology, globalization, market conditions, growth, and poor performance. Based on your personal or professional experience, provide an example of when one of these forces caused an organization to change. Why did it cause this change? What was the result? What resistance to the change occurred, if any? How was the resistance(if any) overcome?
Here is the answer
An Organizational change is the "movement of an organization from one state affairs to another" (Carpenter et al, 2010). There are several reasons as to why an organization would change. It could be due to internal or external factors requiring a change for the organization to operate effectively.
During the recent unfortunate events causing the pandemic, a lot of businesses suffered due to the change in "market conditions". The whole world was affected with the virus spread. Some countries did a good job of containing it, but others didn't. The restaurant industry was heavily hit due to government regulation of enforced curfews. It was a way of containing the spread, but multiple businesses relied on walk in customers. My uncle who owns a restaurant in Seattle had to close the restaurant for 2 months. When the situations where calming down the government proposed local businesses to open with certain limitations. Restaurants were not allowed to have dine-ins. On the weekends I go to help out my uncle with the business to learn a thing or two about the restaurant industry.
Since there was no dine-in. We were left with no choice but only to do delivery. He was able to get in touch with some food delivering companies such as UberEATS and Door dash so that people could order food online from the restaurant. The business environment changed drastically as we had to comply with the government standards of operating in during the pandemic. We could not have more than 5 people inside the restaurant at the same time. So, delivery drivers had to stand outside if the food was not ready. People were required to wear a mask at all times. We had to let go of the waiters as there was no use for them. My uncle managed to retain most of his staff and got them working in the kitchen or as delivery drivers for direct orders. Not everyone had a place to work due the 5-person limitation, so he had to rotate staff.
Most of the staff had commitments and needed work to pay their bills. Just working 2 days out of the week was insufficient for them. There even was one person who slept in the business premises for a week because he lost his apartment. Some staff who were there for a long time wanted more hours than the ones who joined later. This caused some disputes between staff members. Some had even left the job and moved in with their parents due to financial hardship.
Their problem was somewhat overcome by rotation the staff 2 days a week. But that was not the solution to the issue. Now that the government has taken steps on helping the businesses and allowing community to dine out things are getting back to normal. But still there is a limitation of how many people could one inside the premises at a given time.
