Here is the question
n Chapter 7 of the text, there are several forces for organizational change: workplace demographics, technology, globalization, market conditions, growth, and poor performance. Based on your personal or professional experience, provide an example of when one of these forces caused an organization to change. Why did it cause this change? What was the result? What resistance to the change occurred, if any? How was the resistance(if any) overcome?
Here is the answer
The most recent that I can think of is the company I used to work for that I previously said had shut down there Lawrence location. Earlier this year, the owner of the franchise, Ken Mechtley, shut down yet another site. The downtown Topeka closed due to market conditions, I am sure. The location he shut down this time was in downtown Topeka. This store was only open 10a-3p because of its location, and it was closed on Sundays.
Its main customers were those on their lunch break and were grabbing a quick bite to eat. Downtown Topeka is full of businesses that are Monday through Friday 8a-5p businesses. After 5 pm, downtown Topeka is almost a ghost town. I am sure that the global pandemic was the main reason for closing this site since it had a limited market. The location was good for sales Monday through Friday, but there was no reason it should have been open on Saturdays other than that was part of the contract that Mr. Mechtley had signed with corporate to purchase the franchise.
Since the business had a limited market, and many companies beginning to work their employees remotely due to the global pandemic, it would not have been cost-effective to keep this location open. Any resistance they may have had from employees because of potential job losses, I am sure they handled this a little better than they did with the Lawrence closure. I am sure they handled it better because there are two other locations in the Topeka area, unlike the Lawrence area where there was only one location. When Mr. Mechtley decided to close the downtown location because people were already staying at home, I am sure he gave them the option to transfer to another site or draw unemployment.
I do not believe any of us could ever have thought that a virus would change business markets, schools, our whole lives overnight. The entire global world has had an organizational change and is still in the midst of it. The coronavirus hit us hard, but although families have struggled and businesses have shut down, the coronavirus has not been all bad. It has caused us to slow down and reconnect with our loved ones and shown us that we can heal the planet. It was nice to see families doing things together again and see that the planet healing. Do I think this virus taught us a lesson? Yes and no. Yes, for some, they will reduce their carbon footprint and enjoy the family more, but ultimately, we as people believe that money makes us happy, and we could not be further from the truth about that. The pandemic has changed everything, but the world as a whole is still going to chase the power of position and chase the money.
