One of the most common speeches that people give is the speech explaining a process. It is a speech explaining how to do something, how to make something, or how something operates. The purpose of this research/speaking assignment is to provide an opportunity to learn how to organize and present ideas in a logical and sequential order. A secondary purpose is to have you learn how to design or select a visual aid and use it as part of the explanation. Requirements: 1. Select a topic related to your own interests, the interests of your audience, and on which there is available material. 2. Do the amount of research necessary to ensure you will provide the audience with either new information or with a fresh approach to somewhat familiar information. Be sure to verbally CITE YOUR SOURCES - at least two. 3. Prepare an outline, along with a bibliography, of the speech and present it to the instructor prior to speaking. 4. Use at least one visual aid that adds significantly to your explanation. (This is a prepared item-not just an object utilized for the creation of the speech. A photo, a graph, etc.) 5. Have all the items necessary to complete the demonstration. 6. The time limit is 5-6 minutes. DO NOT go over. There is a 10% point deduction for each minute over and over. 7. Speech to be performed from a maximum of 3 note cards. 8. The speech is worth 100 points. Additional: • Points to consider when using a visual aid: 1. It should perform an integral function within the speech 2. It should be large enough to be seen and read or understood by all members of the audience. 3. It should be handled smoothly.
