Orange Computers has a factory in Kansas where it assembles desktops, as well as processes laptops received from an Asian manufacturer. This problem is based upon a simplified process flow of this factory.
The factory faces a steady daily demand for laptops desktop. The factory operates one shift of hours each day and has enough inventory to meet all the demand. Desktop orders go through three stages: Assembly, Burn, and Packing. Laptop orders go through two stages: Burn and Packing. These stages having the following features:
Assembly Desktops Only: There are stations each of which assembles one desktop in minutes. The stations work independently.
Burn Laptops & Desktops: There are stations. Each of the stations writes the software on the computer hard disk, also called a Burn. The ratio of laptops to desktops processed at each of the stations is the same as the mix dictated by the daily demand ie: A desktop takes minutes to burn. Since laptop hard disks are slower, a laptop takes minutes to burn.
Packing Laptops & Desktops: There are packing stations. Each station takes minutes to pack either a laptop or a desktop.
The following diagram illustrates the process flow in the facility. Although not indicated in the diagram, there may be WIP What is the processing capacity of the Burn stage in total computers laptops and desktops per hour? If your answer is not an integer, provide at least three decimal places, eg
Hint: You should consider a repeating cycle or a production run at each station according to the demand mix specified in the problem. Answer is not
