1. What do you think leadership should have to be able to run a successful business? Why?
I have worked many places due to poor management and the way that people can think your life is in their hands and so therefore treat you however they feel. I have seen personally is coercive and connection. I have working for call centers and retail most of my life and so I get a bit of different sides of leadership I different settings. In retail they would say things if something were cleaned or organized by the end of your shift you lose points for the store and that adds up to see if a store is failing to do what is required. Its a weird system I thought but I worked it and did what I could. There were times where they would imply you coming in early or staying late was mandatory, but it wasnt. That to me is what I feel is like coercive type of leadership because of how many times you had to be reminded of what will happen when you dont do something or even make a mistake.
I believe the company wasnt ego-driven maybe a bit if need -driven since most employees werent doing what was expected of them. Some even tried to slide with halfway doing the work so I feel like it was a matter of trying to get through to get the employees to take the jobs more serious. The duties that were required consisted of cleaning and organizing and restocking. There were more tedious things to do but for the most part nothing was too hard its just the job had to have leadership that were coercive because time after time there where employees not listening. I do not believe in coercive being an effective leadership tactic, but I was a bit older than the other employees. Its like being mean in a way and expecting the employees to want to come in or listen and it didnt work but it was replicated over so I left the company. I feel the most effective could be a combination of a few like referent, charismatic and expert. You would want leadership to have these qualities to be able to attract people interest, be inspiring and actually know what youre doing and talking about.
2. How do you think these leadership styles affected team cohesion and performance in the long run?
My previous employment was with the U.S. Coast Guard and during that time I was introduced to several leadership styles. A blend of democratic, coaching, and at times autocratic. In an organization that has several different mindsets different styles were needed to accomplish the mission or job at hand. When performing search and rescue a mixture of autocratic and transformational may have been needed due to the high stress that recue work. When we entered the debrief phase after, the shift of democratic and coaching was needed to make sure that everyone on the team had input and was heard.
Looking back, I would say it was need-driven within the organization. Leadership is something that cannot be effective if your ego is in the way. Learning different techniques can help to manage different situations as not every situation will be solved with one style. Being able to uplift and empower results in a better culture than thinking that everyone and everything is an instrument used to further ones personal gain.
