Case Study: Peter works for a large software development company. The company develops software for clients in the medical industry. Currently, Peter is part of a project team who is developing software that will be installed in intensive care units in a hospital. Peter is responsible for testing the software's functionality and reliability. The software records data from sensors that measure heart rate and blood pressure and displays the data on a monitor. The software should operate automatically and raise an alarm when the measurements go out of normal range values.

There were some delays with software development, and the software development company will have to pay the penalty if it does not deliver the software to the hospital on time. Peter has many years of experience in testing such software. His team has done all the tests as per the contract with the hospital, and the software has passed the required tests. However, Peter noticed that under some conditions not mentioned in the contract, the software behaves in unexpected ways. It displays blinks and shows inaccurate values; also, the alarm is not raised. Peter wants to do further tests, as he suspects there is a bug in the software.

Peter's manager, not recognising the complexity of the problem, wants the job completed within the deadline of the contract, which is in the next few days. Peter's manager says that the tests that the company agreed to do passed, and it is not necessary to conduct further tests. If further tests are conducted, it will delay the handover of the software.
