Health care has been undergoing chaotic changes over the past decades, and your hospital has been facing a major decline in revenue due to managed care and the growing numbers of uncompensated care. After having a consultant review the organization to identify opportunities for cost efficiencies, the decision was made to merge the Medical and Psychiatric Social Work Departments. The hospital's CEO, the Director of Medical Social Work, informed you that you will assume the Director of Social Work position, combining the two programs. There is no plan to reduce the administrative staff; however, the director of Psychiatric Social Work is retiring, and his position will be eliminated. The CEO has given you two months to develop a transition plan for merging the two departments. The Psychiatry Department has a director and 2 Associate Directors. The psychiatry social work staff highly revered the director. You have heard that the Psychiatric workers reset the idea that the department will be subsumed under the Medical Social Work Department. Rather than merging, they see this as a takeover, particularly with their director having retired. The 2 Associate Directors (ADS) are assigned according to the following programs: one is the Associate Director (AD) for Clinical Services, and the other is the Associate Director (AD) for Educational Programming, including students. The Medical Workers are excited that the director will chair the combined department because they believe this will be their role and advantage. The 3 Associate Directors (ADS) are assigned according to services: the AD for Inpatient Services, the AD for Outpatient Services, and the AD for Pediatric Services. As the new director of the combined department, you are committed to developing a structure that maximizes services to your consumers, including patients, the hospital, and the Department of Social Work at the University School of Nursing.
