Throughout history, farmers have developed and relied on their own methods of gathering information about their crops, predicting the weather, and so forth. Identify two key drivers of change and innovation that are encouraging growers to begin using some of the Big Data agricultural techniques discussed in this case?
Two of the key drivers of big data usage in agriculture are feeding a growing population, and optimizing farm equipment. As the population continues to grow the yield of our crops needs to grow as well. This is where big data can really help us out. Big data helps to provide our farmers with data on the rainfall patterns, water cycles and fertilizer requirements. With this information it makes it easier on our farmers to prepare for the types of crops they will be planting as well as when to harvest to maximize their yield. Optimizing farm equipment is also crucial for our farmers. With the help of big data farmers are able to easily monitor their fleet. Big data can show the farmers where their equipment is, while also giving them visibility into availability, service dates, and fuel refill alerts. This way they can plan for repairs and refueling without losing productivity in the field.
Assume that you manage a corn farming operation with 50 full-time employees. You want to motivate your "old-fashioned" employees to change the way they think about planting, watering, fertilizing, harvesting, and transporting corn to the market. You are convinced that Big Data and related technologies should be used to increase your farm's crop yield. Referring back to Exhibit 15.5 on page 366 of the text, identify and explain two ideas how will you unfreeze, move, and refreeze your employees' views about using data and technology for this purpose?
First I would not only explain to them how it works, but also show them. Let them see firsthand how big data can not only make their jobs easier to keep up on maintenance and refueling, but also how it can help the yield of the crops. Letting them be able to see everything it can do will make them more willing to be a part of the change rather than just integrating and forcing them to use it. I would also have examples from other farms and farmers in the area who have made the change. Having them be able to talk to other people about the change will also help them be more involved. Being able to see how much help it can be, and how the yield can grow from the help of technology motivates people more than just being told how it works.
