This week I found an article that examines a study on the effectiveness of giving inactivated influenza vaccine to pregnant women on lab-confirmed influenza infection and resulting hospitalizations in their young infants. The study looked at infants that were hospitalized with laboratory confirmed diagnosis of influenza, and the mothers of infants were considered vaccinated if they had received the influenza vaccine within 2 weeks before giving birth. In 2013/2014 there were 37 infants with confirmed influenza and 81 in 2014/2015 that were considered in the study which would be the sample size for each year. The evidence from the study shows that giving the inactivated influenza vaccine to pregnant women is effective against influenza infection in their young infants, even in a season with a different strain of the virus. According to the article, the vaccines were 66% effective in the 2013/2014 season (95% CI), and 50% in the 2014/2015 (95% CI). The vaccine effectiveness against the dominating strains was higher at 78% effective against H1N1 in 2013/2014 (95% CI), and 60% effective against H3N2 in 2014/2015 (95% CI).
