Please write down your response after reading the paragraph. (At least 5 sentences long. 150-200 words)
I think that self-driving car engineers should develop their cars with a utilitarian perspective on ethics with a deontological secondary. A Utilitarian perspective would allow firstly for the car to always put the least amount of people in danger that is possible in a given situation. This will broadly save more lives and ultimately make a safer vehicle based on numbers. This will also give drivers a sigh of relief because they will have less blood on their hands. If the numbers are equal however, I think the car should have a deontological secondary perspective hardwired into its computer. If there are 2 people that could be killed and the car must choose one, I think it should then base its decision on which of the pedestrians is in the wrong and which is in the right and spare the one that is in the 'right'. It is impossible to predict every scenario that could happen and anytime you think about who to choose to kill it can seem grim, but this programming is what could save the lives of many in the future.
