Assignment 3: Mini-Scavenger Hunt The purpose ofthis activity is to apply our understanding of the purpose of laws, the levels and branches of law and to explore the role of law in society by gathering some information from two different sources. We are also going to continue to ask questions and think about the sources of our information. Your task: (1) Find a current issue that relates to law and briey summarize the purpose of the law and the relevance of the law to daily life. (2) Identify the relevant category of law. (3) Identify the level and branch of government that would be appropriate (4) Find two different sources of information about this current issue (5) Ask 2 questions or make 2 comments about each source you used to learn more about the issue. Look below for an example: An issue that recently gained a great deal of attention from the media, government circles and the Canadian population in general was the Supreme Court decision to permit doctor assisted suicide in February 2015. In this decision the nine judges ofthe Supreme Court indicated that those people suffering from 'grievous and irremediable medical conditions' may seek assistance from a doctor to end his or her life The ruling gives Parliament one year to create a new law that is in keeping with the judgement. I think that the purpose of this law is to give people a choice regarding the end of their lives and the purpose of the existing law prohibiting assisted dying is to keep people sale. This issue is relevant to all Canadians because we care about the people we love and we understand that the end of life is a very difficult time for families. This legal issue is connected to two categories of law: Constitutional law and criminal law. The issue is the right to life which is protected in the Constitution in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. It is connected to criminal law also because under the current laws it is a criminal offence to help a person die. The federal level of government is involved because the Criminal Code and the Constitution both apply to the whole country. All three branches of government are involved. The Supreme Court is the highest court in the country and they are the Judicial branch. The Prime Minister and his Cabinet; the executive branch, are going to have to design a new law. The new law will eventually go before the Members of Parliament in the House of Commons. The MP5 form the legislative branch. I used two sources to learn more about this issue. The rst one | used was "Supreme Court says yes to doctoriassisted suicide in specific cases\" written by Laura Payton on the CBC website on February 6, 2015. The link to the site is http:[[www.cbc.ca[newslpoliticslsupremeicourtisagsigesitoidoctori assistedesuicldeelnespeclficecasese12947487. I liked this article because it had quite a bit of detail and it had a number of links to videos, the international context and articles that expressed different points of view. It has a pdf of the decision itself if I wanted to read the full decision. The article seems to use the personal stories of the people involved to explain the issue and it does include some statements from the government. One question that emerged for me was "What will happen if the year passes and the government has not yet written the new law?" I wonder too about the statement that "there is no evidence that the elderly or people with disabilities are vulnerable to accessing doctor-assisted dying.\" How can I know that this information is accurate? The second source I used was "No need for Harper government to enact new assistedvsuicide legislation: professor\" written by Sharon W on the National Post website on February 2th, 2015. The link to the site is http:/ews.nationa|p0st.com/2015/02126oeneediforeharperegovernmentetoe enacteneweassistedesuicideelegislatloneprofessorf. This article was interesting because it was written a couple of weeks after the initial decision. It considered the opinions and perspectives of people in the medical profession and the writer included statements from an expert in the legal community. It also includes videos and links to further discussions about the ethical questions surrounding this issue. When I read the many comments posted after the article I wondered "What might be the unintended consequences of deliberately not creating a law or regulations to govern end of life care?" I understand that for some people, this decision is a good thing because it allows greater choice while others might be very concerned that this law could harm certain groups of people.
