Leadership Theories Leadership theories are the explanations of how and why certain people become leaders. They focus on the traits and behaviors that people can adopt to increase their leadership capabilities. Some of the top traits that leaders say are vital to good leadership include: Strong ethics and high moral standards. People have long been interested in leadership throughout human history, but it has only been relatively recently that a number of formal leadership theories have emerged. The interest in leadership increased during the early part of the 21st century. Early leadership theories focused on what qualities distinguished between leaders and followers, while subsequent theories looked at other variables such as situational factors and skill levels.
