Question 1 (25 marks) Read the following extract and answer the questions that follow:
Sources of Power People at all levels are interested in and are affected by the acquisition and distribution of rewards and resources. Power plays a central role in the process of allocation of resources. Organisations are made up of individuals that exercise greater or lesser degrees of power. Sometimes, authority stems from a persons title in the organisation or from a specialized knowledge and expertise. Others may exercise power through interpersonal relationships or the force of their personality. However, others still gain influence through an ability to grant access to important resources. Power is the ability to get things done. Those with power are therefore able to influence the behavior of others to achieve some goals or objectives. Sometimes people tend to resist attempts to make them do certain things. However, an effective leader is able to overcome that resistance. Some people regard power as evil or corrupt, power is a fact of organisational life and in itself is neither good nor bad. Leaders can use power to benefit others or to constrain them, to serve the organizations goals or to undermine them. Another way to view power is as a resource that people use in relationships.
