Question 5 [21] Read the scenario below and answer the questions that follow: You are a manager at Hi-Lo Company. Your task is to manage a directorate that is responsible for market research. You lead a team of six researchers and two administrative staff. Your directives for the market research function are closely related to the vision, mission and objectives of the company. Based on the objectives, top management and your department have developed operational plans which clearly indicate which market research areas need to be covered - and attached to it a tight timeline and a limited budget. The environment within which you need to work puts high pressure on you. As the manager, you cannot afford to have anybody not pulling their weight, sticking to timelines and delivering quality market research, as the profitability of the company depends on you and your directorate. As you do every week, on Monday morning you meet staff members to share information and request feedback on progress made with their tasks. On Monday 23 August, two team members refused to provide feedback. On enquiry it seemed that they could not deal with the pressure put on them. They also think that you do not recognise their performance or provide any rewards for their hard work. They announced that they have decided to start a computer-down' strike and no further market research work will be done unless their demands are met.
