Ralph Warren was a self-confident and decisive CEO. He spent the first ten years of his career working for Crimson Judge, a legendary CEO who had been in charge at his hospital for more than 30 years. Warren served first as a vice president and then COO under the tutelage of this superstar. After 20 years of serving as CEO of three other community hospitals, he took a new position in a large and complex academic medical center with a strong re- search focus and a parent university of international renown. Warren felt that his greatest strength as a leader was his decisiveness. He felt he had mod- eled his style after Judge's and this had served him well. When asked what his decision-making style was, Warren once said, "I think it is summed up by four key points: first, it is likely I have had every experience a CEO could possibly have in the field. I have seen it all. Second, decisions to me are like math-there really are clear-cut paths to take. Third, I feel that the courage to act and to act decisively sends a clear message to those in the organiza- tion that they can trust me and where we are going. And finally, I simply do not believe in mistakes; yes, I may make course corrections at times, but they are usually minor." Clearly Ralph Warren can articulate his decision-making philosophy. What might be wrong with it? How might Warren encounter problems in his new job? Ralph Warren was a self-confident and decisive CEO.
