The future generations will have to find other alternatives in order to maintain our present lifestyles and the vast majority of scientists believe that we have to do something about it. If we accept that change has to take place, we can consider what the catalyst will be for such change. Will it be governments telling us to save energy in various ways, or companies producing more energy-efficient products? Some people may change their practices for ideological reasons believing that to save the planet they will need to reduce their car mileage, stop heating their houses to 25 degrees in winter, or cooling them to a freezing temperature of 16 degrees in summer so that they can sit in shorts and a T-shirt to watch their home cinema! This means that the strategies proposed by these governments will be applicable for the short term only and will not provide a durable solution to the crisis. Perhaps surprisingly, some of the poorest people in the world will be the least affected. If you are a subsistence farmer, growing enough food for your family and just a few more vegetables to sell at the market, then you are unlikely to have energy requirements. However, if you cannot live without your car and spend a large proportion of your income on energy in its various forms, then it is highly likely that you will have to accept some quite dramatic changes in your life.
