Recommendation Report

In your workplace, you will often be asked to provide recommendations to your supervisor or department on ways to improve your workplace environment or atmosphere. These documents, when informal, will often be brief and direct, but they must still be reasonable and convincing to your reader; the audience for a recommendation report often consists of decision makers. Like your proposal, recommendation reports may take the form of a memo or letter. For this assignment, you will create a recommendation report in the form of a memo.

Topic for Report

At many institutions, online classes face unique issues such as a lack of student engagement and higher drop or failure rates. Dallas College has asked your class to determine how we can improve the retention and pass rates for online courses at our institution.

To begin this project, you should complete the Recommendation Report brainstorming discussion board to discuss and identify potential causes for lower retention and passing rates in online courses. Consider your own experiences in online courses, talk with a classmate, or look up sources online. Then, complete an Audience and Use Profile. You must identify a specific person at Dallas College (any campus) as the recipient of your memo.

Once you have finished your brainstorming and identified a specific audience, you will write a recommendation report in which you suggest solutions for this problem. Remember to keep your audience in mind; these solutions will be implemented by the institution not the student, so they must be recommendations for how the instructors or the college can better assist online students. Your report should not provide suggestions for how students can do better in their courses.

Your final report should be 1 to 2 pages in an appropriate font and in memo format. Please see the following page for a detailed grading rubric for this project.
