Research Memo Problem (Plumbing) Piper Jamie has come to you for help filing his 2021 tax return. Jamie has filed his taxes for his business on his own for many years but has decided to seek your assistance this year. He owns a successful plumbing business. He is also building a new home. Jamie has informed you that on occasion, he will trade services with other professionals (barter). In the trade, Jamie will perform plumbing services in exchange for electrical work or other services on his home under construction. Jamie has never included this in income, as he did not receive any payment, for these services. He has come to you and asks if he is correct that he does not have to include as income the services he performed (he has done it every year) if he did not receive any payment for these services.

a. Use the RIA Checkpoint Research tax library to determine how much, if any, of Piper’s services are included in income.

b. Write a memo to communicate your results to your supervisor using the five basic parts: 

(1) the facts, 

(2) issues, 

(3) authority list, 

(4) conclusion, 

(5) analysis.

The purpose of the memo is to inform others of the research question and it should be written in an objective manner by discussing all relevant authorities that support as well as conflict with the answer.
