The Cisco proprietary VLAN Trunking Protocol (VTP) allows administrators to automate the distribution of VLAN information throughout a Cisco enterprise/campus network. VTP comes in three (3) distinct versions: Version 1, Version 2, and Version 3. Each of the versions has made significant improvements over the previous release, but there are still many pitfalls when using VTP to go along with the benefits. While all versions of VTP offer the administrator relief from having to 'touch' every switch in the network when configuring VLANs, this benefit comes at the risk of substantial danger to the environment in more than one form. In this post you should compare and contrast the different versions of VTP paying special attention to the benefits that each new version has over its predecessors and discuss what the dangers of using VTP might be along with what Cisco has done to try to remedy these dangers.
