The Discipline Process

This exercise examines the four steps in the discipline process.

Supervisors are responsible for maintaining discipline, making sure the workplace is safe, and that employees are performing to the best of their ability. When a supervisor becomes aware of a problem, the supervisor must meet with those involved, investigate the situation, and decide if discipline is required and, if so, what level of discipline.

Step 1: Place the following types of discipline in order of severity from least severe to most severe.

Suspension Dismissal Warning(s) Demotion

Step 2: Roll the cursor over the names. Think about the statement made by each employee, then drag the name to the correct column in the chart to describe the type of discipline involved.

Emily: "My supervisor said the company had given me all the chances they could, that it was obvious I just was not going to work up to the performance levels required. Guess I better start working for a new job."

Amie: "I guess i have made too many mistakes, My supervisor is moving me from a level three machinist back to a level two machinist with a cut in pay too."

Barry: "My supervisor told me I should stop spending time on Facebook When I should be working."

Charlie: "My company has a zero tolerance drug policy. Yesterday, during a random drug test, my result came back a positive. Now I am looking for a new job.

Lacey: "I just received a letter from my supervisor detailing all of my recent absences and stating if i don't start coming to work on time, there will be consequences. I have to sign it and sent it back."

Mark: "I didn't turn in my reports on time -- again. I have been told not to come to work for three days and to take that time to decide If i really want to keep my job.

Scott: "I'm happier back working as a machine repair person rather than a repair machine specialist. Even though the pay is less, at least i don't have all that responsibility.

Sherry: "My boss caught me sleeping in the break room again as result of too much partying. I've been told not to come back to work for two weeks."
